Hull singer Joe Longthorne to feature in new TV documentary recorded after Buckingham Palace date

ENTERTAINER Joe Longthorne is to be featured in a new documentary that will explore his life and work.

The film, which is set to be screened on British television in spring, was recorded last week after the Hull-born entertainer received his MBE at Buckingham Palace.

In the interviewer's chair was Neil Sean, the established showbusiness journalist who first met Joe while working for Sky News.

"I have interviewed many different people – I've met everybody you could want to meet – but he really touched me, he is such a down-to-earth person," said Neil, who had suggested making the documentary to Joe.

"Sometimes you get the feeling they are play-acting when they are talking about their charity work – with Joe, I think he genuinely wants to do good with his life."

The 90-minute chat, which was recorded at the Westminster Live studios overlooking the Thames, took place after a camera crew had accompanied Joe to the Palace.

The Blackpool-based singer, who grew up in Hull's Hessle Road, was awarded the MBE for his services to charity – through his support for organisations including the Variety Club of Great Britain and Cancer Research UK.

"We could not film the investiture but when you go into the Palace for Joe, and for me, it is like a dream," Neil said.

"You are waiting in a room drinking coffee and it feels like a strange thing.

"But Joe was not nervous, he was very calm and collected. He was emotional when he came out."

Talks are now under way as to which terrestrial TV channel will screen the documentary.

The programme, which includes songs and never-before-heard stories, will also be screened in countries such as America, Germany and Australia.

JOE LONGTHORNE MBE IS STILL TALK OF THE TOWN

Legendary singer and TV star Joe Longthorne enjoyed a double celebration as he was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace and then travelled straight to one of his favourite venues to announce an exclusive run.

The Hull-born star, who says that being awarded an MBE is "an unexpected honour", returned to one of the venues where he made his name, The Hippodrome in London's Leicester Square. Formerly branded as The Talk Of The Town, Longthorne was the last artist to perform at the venue when he held a month-long residency in 1982, and yesterday returned to the famous London landmark for the first time since it reopened as a casino this summer following an extensive refurbishment. "I'm honoured to be back here” he commented. “It’s the soul of the West End and so many great performers have played here. I’m really looking forward to playing here again next year”.

One of the country’s best-loved entertainers in the 1980s, Longthorne was diagnosed with Leukemia at the height of his career and went on to fight a 17 year battle with the illness. Despite a near fatal bone marrow transplant in 2005, and against all the odds, Longthorne made a full recovery and is now back to his best, performing once again at venues around the world.

Simon Thomas, owner of The Hippodrome, said that "it's a privilege to welcome Joe back to a venue where he was such a resounding success and we're looking forward to his show in 2013".

Joe Longthorne MBE will perform a run of shows at The Hippodrome's Matcham Room Cabaret Theatre in early 2013. www.hippodromecasino.com

Such an honour for Joe : The Blackpool Gazette 14 Dec 2012

FYLDE coast singing sensation Joe Longthorne today revealed his pride after picking up his MBE at Buckingham Palace.

The 57-year-old crooner received the top award from Prince Charles because of his long career in the entertainment industry and the work he does for charity.

The entertainer was awarded the honour in the 2012 Birthday Honours list.

Joe today revealed how nervous he had been before receiving the gong from the famous royal.

And he said he was particularly impressed by how knowledgeable the prince was as he referred to Joe’s victory in his battle against cancer.

He added: “I was up at 4.30am because I couldn’t sleep but I needn’t have worried because Prince Charles put everyone at their ease.

“He even said that I must have someone looking after me so I was touched and honoured that he’d done his homework about me.”

He added that they chatted for three or four minutes about his charity work - including some for the Prince’s Trust, Charles’ own foundation.

The whole ceremony took a couple of hours before Joe and his entourage headed straight to Hull where his family still live, to show them all his special medal.

He added: “But I’ll be back at work on Saturday and Sunday because the show must go on.”

Joe will be heading a special evening at the Viva Cabaret Bar in Blackpool next Thursday to celebrate his award.

JOE GOES TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO RECEIVE HIS MBE

Six months after the announcement of a MBE for British Entertainer Joe Longthorne in the Queens Birthday Honours List, extra special with it being her Diamond Jubilee Year, today was the day that Joe received the award in an investiture at Buckingham Palace.
On one of the coldest days of the year, with the winter morning sunshine glimmering on the Victoria Memorial , Joe arrived about 9.45am at the Palace in style, driven in a white Rolls Royce to be greeted by fans and onlookers. Dressed immaculately and very elegantly he waved and acknowledged everyone’s good wishes from the car and was then driven sedately into the Palace courtyard before going in for the investiture.
Ceremony and pageant are among this country’s specialities and it was on full display at the palace today. The ceremony lasted around 2 hours with the honours being awarded by HRH The Prince of Wales. Just after 12noon his white Rolls Royce could be seen emerging from the Palace courtyard and proceeded towards the gates. Joe looked elated and graciously acknowledged everyone as the car passed by.
After a few moments Joe emerged from the car and spoke about the event and commented that he was completely delighted and deeply honoured to be given the award and to chat to HRH The Prince of Wales. In his accustomed way Joe underlined that the MBE was for his charity work and thanked everyone who has worked with him and for him over the years to achieve his goals and aims. He has many plans for the future both professional and for his favoured good causes and we can all wish him well and add our sincere congratulations on this very special day.

Joe Longthorne speaks to the Hull Daily Mail ahead of his visit to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE

THERE'S the sound of a family get-together at Joe Longthorne's Blackpool home.

In the background, the singer's sister, Lizzie, is helping out with the dinner – and giving him the occasional prompt about his early performing days in Hull.

"I've got a house full of people – nephews, nieces, it's like the Royle Family," he says with a grin.
If the 57-year-old sounds full of the joys of life, then it's with some justification.

Already buoyed by a summer that saw Hull boxer Luke Campbell – the son of one of Joe's school friends – win gold at the Olympic Games, the performer is on his way to Buckingham Palace next week.

Next Thursday he will be made an MBE for services to charity in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

He's delighted – but admits when he heard the news from his partner and manager, Jamie Moran, he thought it was a wind-up.

"He told me when I was in a venue in the West End. He said I'd got a letter from the Palace and I thought he was kidding," says Joe.

"It was a shock. When I was at Sydney Smith School, they never said to us 'Here's what you should do when you meet the Queen'."

The award recognises his fundraising for charities including the Variety Club of Great Britain, the DCWC (Development of Children and Women Centre) in Nepal, and Cancer Research UK – which, as a survivor of leukaemia, is a cause close to him.

"The MBE will be great for raising awareness – which is just as important as raising money," he says.

"I had my bone marrow transplant in 2005 and was read the last rites three times – sometimes you have to go through things to have a take on it. I know exactly what I'm talking about but it is more about listening to people.

"I'm no more special than anybody else and no different to anybody else anywhere."

He is looking forward to the presentation at the Palace, though jokes that the timing is so strict he might not get a cup of tea.

"I love them," he says. "I'm English and it's part of that tradition – more than a 1,000 years worth – it is what we do.

"And it's nice to receive an award like that – though the fans, more than me, deserve it.

"They are the real engine behind the Joe Longthorne Friendship Club, they see it all through."

He will get a chance to meet some of them two days later. Joe's first post-MBE gig will be back in his home city at The Ritz Cabaret Showbar in Holderness Road, east Hull.

The club is set to welcome those who have travelled from as far afield as Wales, London, Lancashire and County Durham – all part of the fanbase he has built up over the past 40 or so years of performance.

Joe says the last time he appeared at the venue was during his early teens, alongside fellow Hull musicians including Johnny Pat.

"It was one of my first gigs – I played all those clubs and it was good training for me," he says.

"They were good, down-to-earth places – there aren't many left of them around the country now.

"So it was great when I saw Jamie had put me down for it – it's going to be a thrill that it's my first gig after getting the MBE. I love to come home.

"There was the great David Whitfield, and other great singers from Hull, so it is good to be a member of that club."

He is filled with talk of future plans – which include jetting off to America this January for a tour and appearances in Tenerife in April.

There has also been talk of three one-hour specials on ITV, on a similar template to the Joe Longthorne Show which he starred in during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

But for the time being he is enjoying spending time with his extended family, including his mum, Teresa, who is visiting his Blackpool home.
"She's 89 and she's beautiful," says Joe.

"My sister, Lizzie, put some of the old stuff on last night and we got a song out of her.
"It was just like the old days."

Joe Longthorne will be performing at The Ritz Cabaret Showbar on Saturday, December 15. The evening, which starts at 8pm, also features the comedian George King and classical group Ti Amero. Tickets cost £25. Call 01482 890893 or 07989 565335.
